Meet the Bursteins
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to introduce our family to the Temple Beth El community. Jeff, Marissa (12), Scott (9) and I have lived in Longmeadow for the past 12 years. Before that, Jeff and I lived in Springfield and then moved to Wilbraham. Jeff is a native of Longmeadow and his family’s ties to Temple Beth El go back to his parents and grandparents. He had his Bar Mitzvah at Temple Beth El. I am originally from Wantagh, New York. I met Jeff met during our freshman year at Union College in Schenectady, NY. We went on a group date freshman year (set up by my roommate as a dorm social) and remember speaking with each other on the way to temple during the high holidays that year. After graduation, Jeff went on to Law School at Western New England University School of Law and I went on to teach while earning a Masters of Education degree from Hofstra University. Having a long distance relationship was difficult at times, but we continued to see each other whenever possible. After Jeff’s aufruf at Temple Beth El, we were married on November 22, 1998, at the Merrick Jewish Center in New York.
Jeff and I both felt it was important for our children to be part of the local Jewish community. Both Marissa and Scott went to preschool at the JCC and later started Kindergarten at Heritage Academy. When we enrolled Marissa at Heritage Academy, we thought it would be a one-year stint. Our plan was to move Marissa to public school after that first year; however, we were so impressed with the caring and motivational approach that the administrators, faculty and staff took at Heritage that Marissa stayed through 5th grade and Scott is currently enrolled in 4th grade there.
I have taught 4th grade in the Ludlow School District since moving to Massachusetts and Jeff has been practicing law in private practice at Burstein Law Offices, P.C. Marissa and Scott keep very busy when they’re not at school or studying. Marissa attends Hebrew school, plays lacrosse, and practices the violin. Scott enjoys rehearsing and participating in school plays and other school activities, and the list goes on. They are very active in hockey as Scott is a goalie for Wilbraham Twin Meadows and Marissa plays on a girl’s traveling team. They have enjoyed being ingrained in the Jewish community and can often be spotted with their paternal grandmother when she is in town attending temple services and events. We are all looking forward to Marissa’s upcoming Bat Mitzvah in 2017.
