Springfield Adult Jewish Learning Classes
As Melton classes have always been, the following classes are being offered to the entire community. We are pleased that Rabbi Devorah Jacobson will be teaching two classes this fall, and we are happy to welcome Rabbi James Greene as an instructor. Please note that the curriculum for each class was developed by the instructor, and there are no prerequisites in order to enroll.
The 70 Faces of Torah: Hasidic Texts Shine a Light on Torah - Torah is the foundation of Jewish life, and the study of Torah has been the source of Jewish spirituality for over 2,000 years.
This 10-week class will be taught by Rabbi James Greene, the Assistant Executive Director of the Springfield Jewish Community Center. Together, we will study selections of Me’or Eynayim, a collection of teachings by Rabbi Menachem Nachum of Chernobyl, one of the early Hasidic masters.
All texts will be studied in English, with the Hebrew provided as a reference for discussion. No previous experience in text study or Hasidic literature is necessary.
Mondays, starting September 12, 9:30 – 11:00 am. Springfield JCC, 1160 Dickinson Street, Springfield
Cost: $225, plus a $25 materials fee.
Jewish Book Group and More - During this 10-week class, taught by Rabbi Devorah Jacobson, we will explore the theme of “Journeys” through different media: books, brief essays, podcasts and film. The books are all National Jewish Book Council award winners. They include: All Who Go Do Not Return, by Shulem Deen and Through the Door of Life: A Jewish Journey Between Genders by Joy Ladin. We will also read selections from Kaddish: Women’s Voices.
In addition, we will listen to several fascinating podcasts, and watch the movie The House on Garibaldi Street from the book by Isser Harel.
Wednesdays starting on September 28, 6:15 – 7:45 pm. JGS Lifecare, 770 Converse Street, Longmeadow
Cost: $225 (purchase books on your own). There is an 18-student maximum for this class.
Greatest Hits From the Talmud - Begin your morning with a taste of Talmud! In this 10-week class, taught by Rabbi Devorah Jacobson, we will encounter some of the most fascinating discussions of the ancient sages as recorded on various pages of the Babylonian Talmud. Join us in exploring these different “gems” of the Talmud and attempting to wrestle with their meanings in their time and in our own. This class is for beginners and beyond, seekers, and lovers of Jewish learning!
