Rabbi Lawrence Kushner tells of the time he brought a nursery school class into the synagogue sanctuary for a tour. He showed them the bima, the ner tamid (eternal light), the cantor’s and rabbi’s lecterns. Finally, the tiny kids stood before the huge doors of the holy ark. “What do you suppose is in there?” he asked them.

It is even possible to convince yourself that you have a community. In many ways the computer makes it easy for us to stay home or choose to be alone.

Elementary School Tragedy Beyond Words

The tragic events that took place on Friday at the Sandy Hook Elementary School are beyond words. The deaths of so many people, both innocent young children and caring adults, whose final acts were attempts to protect their students, brings us to the edge of despair. Since I heard the news last Friday afternoon I find my emotions are swirling. I find myself so profoundly sad one moment. And later I become outraged. Like many of you, I am at a loss.
